Flip of course isn’t the only minicamcorder maker that could be worried about Apple’s attempts to enter this market. The Flip begot several imitators, like the Sony Webby, the Kodak Zi8, and devices from RCA, Sanyo, and Creative.

But Flip is the de facto leader in minicams, and its Ultra and Mino models have several things going for them that the much more compact Nano doesn’t, like the Flip’s flip-out USB port that allows the camera to be plugged directly into a computer without need for a connector cable. The Flip also has user-replaceable Inspiron 6400 batteries. Though the Nano overall has a smaller footprint, it was a bit unfair that when comparing the Flip to the Nano during its presentation Apple used the chunkiest model of Flip available (the Ultra), when the Mino is much slimmer and more compact.

The Apple(17-inch PowerBook G4 battery) Imac 24-inch (GeForce GT 130), the company’s top-of-the-line iMac, is a moderate refresh. The new Nvidia motherboard chipset and discrete graphics give it a leg up on the previous high-end model, and CTO (configure to order) options give it the flexibility to serve all but the most specialized content creators.

More functionally, the Trim interface familiar to users of iMovie, or more recently the Iphone 3GS makes an appearance. Videos can be exported directly to either MobileMe, YouTube or iTunes. That latter option presents the further three options of re-compressing for a computer <span style=”color: #0000ff;”>PA3383U-1BRS </span>, the iPhone or an Apple TV. In addition to movie and audio recording, QuickTime now offers screen recording, with audio commentary of course.

Averatec’s got a new laptop PA3384U-1BRS , the Averatec N3400, for $799 that has some decent features and some nice styling. 13.3-inch screen, with an Intel Dual Core 2.15GHz processor, 3GB of RAM (maxes out at 8GB), and a 250GB hard drive at under 4 pounds. While there is no internal optical drive, this Averatec comes packed with an external USB DVD/CD burner. As for the rest of the specs: 1.3 megapixel webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, memory card reader, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and 10/100/1000 Ethernet. If you’re looking for a step above a netbook, this one looks pretty good.
