The new SIM free white iPhone 4 from Apple is perhaps the most enthusiastically expected smartphone of the year. Although availability isn’t yet confirmed, we take a look at the great new features on offer.

Thinnest ever smartphone

The white iPhone 4 signifies the first change in design since the original model was released in 2007. It sports a sleek, squared off look with an engineered glass finish claimed to be six times more scratch resistant than plastic. A stainless steel frame doubles as an antenna.

White iPhone battery life

Previous models were often criticised for their limited battery life, with a full charge sometimes not sufficient to get through a full day. The revised battery is said to be 20% bigger which, combined with a more efficient A4 processor borrowed from the Ipad, should help to eliminate these issues.

iOS 4 multitasking

This was the main issue with earlier versions of the iPhone operating system and something which smart phones using Google’s Android operating system have had for some time. The new iPhone OS 4 (or iOS 4 as it is now to be known) has the ability to run numerous applications at once, bringing the iPhone up to date with competitors from manufacturers such as Sony-Ericsson, HTC, Nokia and Motorola.

Better screen

The iPhone 3GS’s 480×320 pixel resolution will be doubled to 960×640 pixels. Despite this improvement, the screen has a slightly smaller diagonal measurement than previous generations. High-definition material should look superb on the new screen, dubbed the retina display by Apple CEO Steve Joes.

White iPhone processor

A revised processor from the Apple iPad is employed to cope with the new screen resolution and multitasking features.

SIM free white iPhone MicroSIM

The latest model will use this smaller sized SIM card, as used in the 3G iPad. This means that those staying with the same network will have to get replacement SIM cards from their network provider before being able to use it on the iPhone. An alternative method would be to use a SIM cutter on your existing SIM card.

Improved App storage

The new iOS 4 will allow an impressive 2,160 applications to be stored on the device, along with the ability to store apps into separate folders. Previous operating systems only permitted 180 apps to be saved.

iBookstore

As well as being introduced on the iPad, iBookstore will be heading for the white iPhone. This should provide a good an alternative to the free iPhone app for Amazon’s Kindle service.
